The history of the house (1650-1998)

The house at Oudeschans 15 is originally built in 1650 as a warehouse. It's proximity to the 16th-century Montelbaanstoren and location on the canal underscore its historical significance. Back in the day, the Oudeschans was a crucial redoubt where ships were inspected, making it a bustling shipyard and industrial site. Interestingly, despite its industrial past, the Oudeschans has retained a quiet, almost village-like atmosphere, standing in stark contrast to the bustling center of Amsterdam.

During the 19th century, the house underwent significant modifications. A rear house was added to the rear facade, primarily to accommodate toilet facilities, bathrooms, and utility rooms. This change coincided with an influx of working-class families who moved from rural areas to urban centers during the urbanization of the Netherlands. The house, therefore, became a microcosm of the broader societal shifts occurring at that time. The garden of Oudeschans 15 saw another addition in the 1970s, which has been affectionately named 'the camper.' This extension adds another layer to the house's rich history.

Fast forward to 1989, when Bonne's mother saw potential in the neighborhood despite its decline. She persuaded her father to purchase the house. This decision brought the house into Bonne's family, and a year later, Bonne was born. They spent her early years from 1990 to 1998 living at the Oudeschans. This unique upbringing provided Bonne with a blend of urban history and rural charm.

Bonne

When Bonne was 8 years old he suddenly lost his mother, after which Bonne started to live at his foster parents. When Bonne turned 17 he finished highschool and started to live at the house again, together with a group of friends. He started working in a clothing store, after which his career as an independent entrepreneur quickly took off. At his 23 he started clothing brand 'Bonne Suits' - an alternative to fast fashion with sustainable suits that are separated from gender, occasion, age or social origin and suitable for every season. Bonne not only enjoyed living with great pleasure with various housemates, but also have periodically organized performances, happenings and galleries at the house. At a certain point this is what the house became known for.

The renovation (2022-2024)

After 14 turbulent and exciting years living in the house, it was time for a new area in which the house needed a touch up. Bonne started the renovation at 2022 and it ultimately lasted two long years. The entire house has been completely renovated from top to bottom and is now perfectly insulated and renewed.

The neighborhood

The house is located in the center of Amsterdam, near Waterlooplein and Stopera, a 10-minute walk from Central Station. You only have to walk 200 meters and you are at the Nieuwmarkt, where there is an organic market every Saturday. The adjacent Zeedijk has a great arsenal of butchers, fishmongers, bakers, pubs, cafés, coffee bars and this street is well on its way to becoming one of the hippest shopping streets in the Netherlands with, among others, Patta, Commes des Garçons, Stüssy, Zeedijk 60 and the new originals in his possession. Larger stores such as Albert Hein, Blokker and Etos are also a 200-metre walk away on the Jodenbreestraat and the Waterlooplein is still a great market, so you can get there in no time.

The house is located 150 meters from the IJ tunnel, so you can easily reach the A10 via the S116.

Tourism

We experience the Nieuwmarkt-neighborhood as a real neighborhood. We say hello to all shop owners and neighbors and everyone knows each other very well. Of course there is a lot of tourism, especially on the Zeedijk and the Red Light district. But the nice thing about the Oudeschans is that it used to be a 'back moat'. As a result, it still has a bit of an image of an industrial area, so it is not at all part of the busy tourist flow. We experience a lot of peace and quiet at the Oudeschans.

Montelbaanstower

Last but not least, Oudeschans 15 is located directly opposite the beautiful Montelbaanstoren. In our opinion, it will not be more traditionally 'Amsterdam'!
